PIC is required for all individuals, companies, and associations intending to access genetic resources in Uganda. Must be obtained before the start of any collection, use, or export of genetic materials.

Entities Responsible for Granting PIC:

  • Cultural or Indigenous Communities: For resources accessed in ancestral or community lands.
  • Private Landowners: For resources located on privately owned land.
  • Government Entities: Uganda Wildlife Authority or National Forestry Authority for resources in protected areas.

Steps to Obtain PIC:

  • Apply to the relevant resource owners or authorities using prescribed forms
  • Engage in consultations and negotiations to inform stakeholders about the intended use and potential impacts.
  • Reach an agreement that aligns with environmental, social, and economic interests.
